– Case study

Zheni & Rusko

“The management course made us realise that to continue our business, we needed to get serious!”

“So we started at the beginning and asked ourselves, “What does it mean to have a business?” For me, getting this education and understanding how a business works, in general, was very exciting, and I knew it was something that I had to learn about.

As a salon owner, to be successful, you need to create the vision, the mission and the structure of the company, as well as the different positions and the operating systems that need to be included for the salon to run smoothly.

So, the first thing we did was to develop policies and procedures for how we wanted the salon to operate, which has given us the opportunity to delegate more easily because I'm so busy behind the chair that what I'm lacking is time.

I was often tired and overwhelmed, and I realised that the only way to get out of this is if we get organised with the management and structure of the business. So, we began by defining the vision for the business, which was a really important step for me.

I began the process by sitting by myself for a while and thinking about what I wanted from this business, not just what I wanted it to look like. But to be really honest with myself about what it was I wanted it to be like and what I was prepared to do to get it.

We have always believed that for the business to have a future, it would be because we are looking for a win-win. We have always tried to create the best possible situation not just for us as owners but also for the hairdressers who work for us.

So, we have included in the vision for the business that we want to create the best possible situation for the hairdressers and for the customers because it has to be a win-win for everyone, the owners, the team and the customers. Because for the business to succeed everybody has to be happy!

Now, because we are developing the structure, the systems, the salon policies, our team feels that they're in a secure place, and that someone is taking care of this stuff. It’s becoming more professional and more organised, and everybody can understand what is expected from them, and this is creating a more positive culture.

We now also have job descriptions for everyone on our team and we also give them to new people when they start so they understand what is expected from them. This has helped everyone and made it much easier when it comes to giving them feedback because we can refer back to the job description.

Before this course, we recognised that our business had plateaued, so doing the course helped us be more confident in opening the second location, and we have been able to do it in a much more organised way because of the management course.

Now that we have opened another location. It made it even more important that we had the vision defined, the systems in place, the job descriptions, the policies and procedures and a culture that represents our brand.

This work is never finished, but we continue to grow and improve.

If you are a salon owner, you definitely need all of the courses. Otherwise, I honestly don't know how you will manage.
