Andrew Cannon, founder and chief ‘Ruffian’ at Ruffians the award-winning barbershops in London and Edinburgh.

After studying Biological Sciences at university Andrew moved from Scotland to London where he started as a graduate in a marketing and advertising agency. He wanted a change from the constant learning, analysis and logic of molecular science, to have the chance to be more creative and inventive. The advertising/marketing agency client base was a mixture of retail, media and financial services, but it was the retail side of marketing which he became most involved in and the sector which he moved into in more of a management and operational capacity. It was after some time in the retail sector that he decided he wanted to set up and run his own company.

He had been thinking about it for some time and analysing the market for potential business opportunities; it was after a discussion with a family friend and business mentor that Andrew decided that the men’s grooming industry was under resourced and serviced, and it was from that point onwards that he started building Ruffians.

Whilst not coming from a hair dressing or barbering background may have put some people off from pursuing a niche business opportunity, Andrew Cannon saw it as an opportunity to combines his many entrepreneurial skills with his marketing and business background.

Ruffians was founded in Edinburgh’s West End in 2012, borne of a frustration with the lack of barbers out there providing great customer service. Within six months it became a resounding success and won Best Independent Newcomer at the British Hairdressing Business Awards, and Best New Salon and Best Designed Salon in the UK at the prestigious Creative Head industry awards.

December 2013 saw Ruffians launch in London’s Covent Garden, and this flagship store has gone on to win Best Customer Experience in the UK within eight months of trading.

Ruffians Barbers has cemented it’s place as an award-winning barber shop and store, giving the best quality haircuts and cut-throat shaves. The staff are hand-picked for their exceptional skills and are carefully trained to guarantee clients always receive the high Ruffians standard. Ruffians pride themselves on their customer service; from their personable approach, with a dedicated barber taking you through the whole service; to their integrated vacuum system to ensure no hairs stray down the neck, to their bespoke whisky and coffee bar offering a rolling calendar of seasonal tipples.

The stores are designed to be stylish and relaxing, masculine environments, with Scottish oak cutting desks providing a communal atmosphere and bringing back the legacy of the barber as a social hub in the community. Ruffians host pop-up shops, limited collaborations, events and photo shoots regularly, and encourage all Ruffians to get involved.

Ruffians also have a tailored product range that they use throughout the service and which are available to buy in store.

Under Andrews guidance with the third Ruffians due to open in London January 2016, it appears that this is just the beginning of the story.
