I was in Poland recently presenting my ‘Super Stylist’ seminar and a young man came up to me at the end and said that he wasn’t a hairdresser but he had just that week started working in the office of a hairdressing company and they suggested to him that he sit in on my seminar.
He said he knew nothing about hairdressing except from the clients’ point of view but that he was blown away by what the seminar was about and to see the hairdressing industry from a different point of view.
He couldn’t find the words in English to express himself and I don’t speak Polish but he said to me, “I feel like a character in the book ‘The lion the witch and the wardrobe’ who has just stepped into the wardrobe and discovered a secret door that led to a world that I didn’t know existed.” I thought to myself what a great analogy that is!
What’s behind the door?
I think we often forget or take for granted what goes on behind the scenes that make a salon and the individuals in it successful.
So much of what makes you a successful hairdresser or salon owner isn’t about ‘hairdressing’! It’s about communication, service, commitment, pride, consistency, professionalism and attention to detail in every area.
As an owner to be successful it’s about defining your target market and the concept of your salon, it’s about positioning your brand to appeal to your target market. It’s about developing standards and operating systems in every area, it’s about financial control and managing other people’s productivity, and it’s about attracting, training, nurturing and leading a team…
I think that most salon owners are like me in that when they open a business they do it out of naivety of what is really involved in building a business and they are completely unprepared for what is on the other side of the door in the back of the wardrobe!
Perhaps some salon owners don’t even realise that there is another world behind the door at the back of the wardrobe and it’s not the world of them being the busiest stylist, doing the most clients, the most retail, the most rebooking, the most colour … instead it’s a world of building and running a business!
There is another world…
